Chamois

Chamois were presented to New Zealand by Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria in the 1900s and, like Tahr, were first released around the Mount Cook area (in the Southern Alps). Chamois are fascinating to watch while out on a hunt – a disruption to the herd can see them hurtling across vertical shingle and rock faces with incredible speed and agility.

Chamois are able to be hunted year round however capes are best from December to August. Heli-assist can be used and is usually preferable as their terrain is more easily accessed by helicopter. The coat of the Chamois is a light brown colour in summer and black in the winter months.
